Public School News
-
- Jon Stonebraker New Albany High School
Jon gave an update on progress with the Spanish 4/OSU distanced learning program. He also talked about the Byrd Polar Research Center partnership at NAHS with Loren Somerlot. Plans are for events during spring Peace week and inviting other schools to participate.
Ann Getz Edison Intermediate School
Grandview participation in Breakfast of Science Champions (Engineering) was positive. Ann used this visit as an opportunity to bring kids “just under the radar.”
- Deke Kidwell Columbus City Schools Teaching Academy
Teaching Academy high school seniors are on campus in the afternoons. Being on campus, seeing college students going about their business to and from classes, getting the “feel”—these effects are not easily quantifiable.
Dickie Selfe Ohio State Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing
CSTW is planning teacher electronic media workshops connected with students who can be facilitators at home schools.
CSTW is also working with schools to create and support writing centers. The initial project at CCS Linden McKinley can be replicated (Whetstone, etc.). Jackie Royster noted that earlier Writing Center projects funded through EECAP 11-12 years ago worked successfully with Diocesan schools

CCS 8th graders spring day across campus-aimed at early college aspiration
This year’s OSU School Partnership Summary will be available soon. We’ll send copies to members of this committee.

We are growing an emphasis on middle school projects—in ASC and across the university
*Greatly expanded Breakfast of Science Champions this year
Number of sites increased from 3 to 7.
Participation opened from CCS to any middle school across the state.
Number of student increased from 80 to 300+
*Humanities Day 8th grade G&T for CCS pilot. If this goes well, we hope to open the project up to more schools in the same way we expanded the Breakfast of Science Champions.
Partnership Projects/Next Steps
- Talking with middle school and early high school about future careers and preparation for college
Are there approaches Ohio State could take that would be supportive of the work schools are already doing with students?
8th grade is a good fit because careers are part of curriculum.
We might ask 8th graders to create a multi-media project of what they could discover about the fields identified on campus as “arts and sciences.” They could interview people—on campus and off about--“Where the arts and sciences can take you.”
Additional resources:
- Ohio State's Office of Economic Access provides a number of online materials for students and their families as they begin to think about college.
Next Steps:
ASC might sponsor a contest for teacher-led groups/classes to create a multi-media project that would include:
5 $500 awards to school
Campus team of resources
Middle school teachers to lead teams (either as part of a class project or as an extra-curricular activity)
We can look at Wexner Film Competition as model for process.
if you are interested in serving on a sub-committee to make plans for this project, please contact Mindy Wright (wright.7@osu.edu) We anticipate that there will be three Ohio State members (Dickie Selfe; Mindy Wright; Lori Robishaw, ASC Director of Communications), but we'd like to have at least two middle school teachers join that planning group.
- Other suggestions?
Please send them to Mindy Wright (wright.7@osu.edu)
Discussion of mastery assessment
Metro and Phoenix School are both involved in this process.

- Next Steps:
Ohio State ASC can set up Sharepoint site for discussion of this topic online.
We will also focus the committee's spring meeting on this topic. If you have colleagues who might be interested in this discussion, please let us know so we can invite them.
